1 Samuel 2:1 (NET) New English Translation

1 Hannah prayed, "My heart rejoices in the LORD; my horn is exalted high because of the LORD. I loudly denounce my enemies, for I am happy that you delivered me.
2 No one is holy like the LORD! There is no one other than you! There is no rock like our God!
3 Don't keep speaking so arrogantly, letting proud talk come out of your mouth! For the LORD is a God who knows; he evaluates what people do.
4 The bows of warriors are shattered, but those who stumble find their strength reinforced.
5 Those who are well-fed hire themselves out to earn food, but the hungry no longer lack. Even the barren woman gives birth to seven, but the one with many children withers away.
6 The LORD both kills and gives life; he brings down to the grave and raises up.
7 The LORD impoverishes and makes wealthy; he humbles and he exalts.
8 He lifts the weak from the dust; he raises the poor from the ash heap to seat them with princes and to bestow on them an honored position. The foundations of the earth belong to the LORD, and he has placed the world on them.
9 He watches over his holy ones, but the wicked are made speechless in the darkness, for it is not by one's own strength that one prevails.
10 The LORD shatters his adversaries; he thunders against them from the heavens. The LORD executes judgment to the ends of the earth. He will strengthen his king and exalt the power of his anointed one."
11 Then Elkanah went back home to Ramah. But the boy was serving the LORD under the supervision of Eli the priest.
12 The sons of Eli were wicked men. They did not recognize the LORD's authority.
13 Now the priests would always treat the people in the following way: Whenever anyone was making a sacrifice, while the meat was boiling, the priest's attendant would come with a three-pronged fork in his hand.
14 He would jab it into the basin, kettle, caldron, or pot, and everything that the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. This is what they used to do to all the Israelites when they came there to Shiloh.
15 Even before they burned the fat, the priest's attendant would come and say to the person who was making the sacrifice, "Hand over some meat for the priest to roast! He won't take boiled meat from you, but only raw."
16 If the individual said to him, "First let the fat be burned away, and then take for yourself whatever you wish," he would say, "No! Hand it over right now! If you don't, I will take it forcibly!"
17 The sin of these young men was very great in the LORD's sight, for they treated the LORD's offering with contempt.
18 Now Samuel was ministering before the LORD. The boy was dressed in a linen ephod.
19 His mother used to make him a small robe and bring it up to him at regular intervals when she would go up with her husband to make the annual sacrifice.
20 Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife saying, "May the LORD raise up for you descendants from this woman to replace the one that she dedicated to the LORD." Then they would go to their home.
21 So the LORD graciously attended to Hannah, and she was able to conceive and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. The boy Samuel grew up at the LORD's sanctuary.
22 Now Eli was very old when he heard about everything that his sons used to do to all the people of Israel and how they used to have sex with the women who were stationed at the entrance to the tent of meeting.
23 He said to them, "Why do you behave in this way? For I hear about these evil things from all these people.
24 This ought not to be, my sons! For the report that I hear circulating among the LORD's people is not good.
25 If a man sins against a man, one may appeal to God on his behalf. But if a man sins against the LORD, who then will intercede for him?" But Eli's sons would not listen to their father, for the LORD had decided to kill them.
26 Now the boy Samuel was growing up and finding favor both with the LORD and with people.
27 A man of God came to Eli and said to him, "This is what the LORD says: 'Did I not plainly reveal myself to your ancestor's house when they were in Egypt in the house of Pharaoh?
28 I chose your ancestor from all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to offer sacrifice on my altar, to burn incense, and to bear the ephod before me. I gave to your ancestor's house all the fire offerings made by the Israelites.
29 Why are you scorning my sacrifice and my offering that I commanded for my dwelling place? You have honored your sons more than you have me by having made yourselves fat from the best parts of all the offerings of my people Israel.'
30 Therefore the LORD, the God of Israel, says, 'I really did say that your house and your ancestor's house would serve me forever.' But now the LORD says, 'May it never be! For I will honor those who honor me, but those who despise me will be cursed!
31 In fact, days are coming when I will remove your strength and the strength of your father's house. There will not be an old man in your house!
32 You will see trouble in my dwelling place! Israel will experience blessings, but there will not be an old man in your house for all time.
33 Any one of you that I do not cut off from my altar, I will cause your eyes to fail and will cause you grief. All of those born to your family will die in the prime of life.
34 This will be a confirming sign for you that will be fulfilled through your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas: in a single day they both will die!
35 Then I will raise up for myself a faithful priest. He will do what is in my heart and soul. I will build for him a secure dynasty and he will serve my chosen one for all time.
36 Everyone who remains in your house will come to bow before him for a little money and for a scrap of bread. Each will say, 'Assign me to a priestly task so I can eat a scrap of bread.'"

5 They that were full H7649 have hired out themselves H7936 for bread; H3899 and they that were hungry H7457 ceased: H2308 so that H5704 the barren H6135 hath born H3205 seven; H7651 and she that hath many H7227 children H1121 is waxed feeble. H535
6 The LORD H3068 killeth, H4191 and maketh alive: H2421 he bringeth down H3381 to the grave, H7585 and bringeth up. H5927
7 The LORD H3068 maketh poor, H3423 and maketh rich: H6238 he bringeth low, H8213 and H637 lifteth up. H7311
8 He raiseth up H6965 the poor H1800 out of the dust H4480 H6083 , and lifteth up H7311 the beggar H34 from the dunghill H4480 H830 , to set H3427 them among H5973 princes, H5081 and to make them inherit H5157 the throne H3678 of glory: H3519 for H3588 the pillars H4690 of the earth H776 are the LORD's H3068 , and he hath set H7896 the world H8398 upon H5921 them.
9 He will keep H8104 the feet H7272 of his saints, H2623 and the wicked H7563 shall be silent H1826 in darkness; H2822 for H3588 by strength H3581 shall no H3808 man H376 prevail. H1396

14 And he struck H5221 it into the pan, H3595 or H176 kettle, H1731 or H176 caldron, H7037 or H176 pot; H6517 all H3605 that H834 the fleshhook H4207 brought up H5927 the priest H3548 took H3947 for himself. 17 Wherefore the sin H2403 of the young men H5288 was H1961 very H3966 great H1419 H853 before H6440 the LORD: H3068 for H3588 men H376 abhorred H5006 H853 the offering H4503 of the LORD. H3068
18 But Samuel H8050 ministered H8334 H853 before H6440 the LORD, H3068 being a child, H5288 girded H2296 with a linen H906 ephod. H646
19 Moreover his mother H517 made H6213 him a little H6996 coat, H4598 and brought H5927 it to him from year to year H4480 H3117, H3117 when she came up H5927 with H854 her husband H376 to offer the yearly H3117 sacrifice. H2077

24 Nay H408 , my sons; H1121 for H3588 it is no H3808 good H2896 report H8052 that H834 I H595 hear: H8085 ye make the LORD's H3068 people H5971 to transgress. H5674
25 If H518 one man H376 sin H2398 against another, H376 the judge H430 shall judge H6419 him : but if H518 a man H376 sin H2398 against the LORD, H3068 who H4310 shall entreat H6419 for him? Notwithstanding H3808 they hearkened H8085 not unto the voice H6963 of their father, H1 because H3588 the LORD H3068 would H2654 slay H4191 them.
26 And the child H5288 Samuel H8050 grew H1980 on, H1432 and was in favor H2896 both H1571 with H5973 the LORD, H3068 and also H1571 with H5973 men. H376
27 And there came H935 a man H376 of God H430 unto H413 Eli, H5941 and said H559 unto H413 him, Thus H3541 saith H559 the LORD, H3068 Did I plainly appear H1540 H1540 unto H413 the house H1004 of thy father, H1 when they were H1961 in Egypt H4714 in Pharaoh's H6547 house H1004 ?
28 And did I choose H977 him out of all H4480 H3605 the tribes H7626 of Israel H3478 to be my priest, H3548 to offer H5927 upon H5921 mine altar, H4196 to burn H6999 incense, H7004 to wear H5375 an ephod H646 before H6440 me? and did I give H5414 unto the house H1004 of thy father H1 H853 all H3605 the offerings made by fire H801 of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 ?
29 Wherefore H4100 kick H1163 ye at my sacrifice H2077 and at mine offering, H4503 which H834 I have commanded H6680 in my habitation; H4583 and honorest H3513 H853 thy sons H1121 above H4480 me , to make yourselves fat H1254 with the chiefest H4480 H7225 of all H3605 the offerings H4503 of Israel H3478 my people H5971 ?
30 Wherefore H3651 the LORD H3068 God H430 of Israel H3478 saith, H5002 I said H559 indeed H559 that thy house, H1004 and the house H1004 of thy father, H1 should walk H1980 before H6440 me forever H5704 H5769 : but now H6258 the LORD H3068 saith, H5002 Be it far H2486 from me; for H3588 them that honor H3513 me I will honor, H3513 and they that despise H959 me shall be lightly esteemed. H7043
31 Behold H2009 , the days H3117 come, H935 that I will cut off H1438 H853 thine arm, H2220 and the arm H2220 of thy father's H1 house, H1004 that there shall not be H4480 H1961 an old man H2205 in thine house. H1004
32 And thou shalt see H5027 an enemy H6862 in my habitation, H4583 in all H3605 the wealth which H834 God shall give H3190 H853 Israel: H3478 and there shall not H3808 be H1961 an old man H2205 in thine house H1004 forever H3605 H3117 .
33 And the man H376 of thine, whom I shall not H3808 cut off H3772 from H4480 H5973 mine altar, H4196 shall be to consume H3615 H853 thine eyes, H5869 and to grieve H109 H853 thine heart: H5315 and all H3605 the increase H4768 of thine house H1004 shall die H4191 in the flower of their age. H376
34 And this H2088 shall be a sign H226 unto thee, that H834 shall come H935 upon H413 thy two H8147 sons, H1121 on H413 Hophni H2652 and Phinehas; H6372 in one H259 day H3117 they shall die H4191 both H8147 of them.
35 And I will raise me up H6965 a faithful H539 priest, H3548 that shall do H6213 according to that which H834 is in mine heart H3824 and in my mind: H5315 and I will build H1129 him a sure H539 house; H1004 and he shall walk H1980 before H6440 mine anointed H4899 forever H3605 H3117 .
36 And it shall come to pass, H1961 that every one H3605 that is left H3498 in thine house H1004 shall come H935 and crouch H7812 to him for a piece H95 of silver H3701 and a morsel H3603 of bread, H3899 and shall say, H559 Put H5596 me , I pray thee, H4994 into H413 one H259 of the priests' offices, H3550 that I may eat H398 a piece H6595 of bread.
