1. When Jacobn went to Egypt, he took his sons, and each son took his own family with him. These are the names of the sons of Israel:

|

5. There was a total of seventy people who were descendantsd of Jacob. Jacob's son Joseph was already in Egypt.

6. Some time later, Joseph and his brothers died, along with all the people who had lived at that same time.

7. But the people of Israel had many children, and their number grew greatly. They became very strong, and the country of Egypt was filled with them.

8. Then a new king began to rule Egypt, who did not know who Joseph was.

9. This king said to his people, "Look! The people of Israel are too many and too strong for us to handle!

10. If we don't make plans against them, the number of their people will grow even more. Then if there is a war, they might join our enemies and fight us and escape from the country!"

10. 11. So the Egyptians made life hard for the Israelites. They put slave masters over them, who forced the Israelites to build the cities Pithom and Rameses as supply centers for the king.

11. Therefore they did set H7760 over H5921 them taskmasters H8269 H4522 to H4616 afflict H6031 them with their burdens H5450 . And they built H1129 for Pharaoh H6547 treasure H4543 cities H5892 , H853 Pithom H6619 and Rameses H7486 .

12. But the harder the Egyptians forced the Israelites to work, the more the Israelites grew in number and spread out. So the Egyptians became very afraid of them

12. But the more H834 they afflicted H6031 them , the more H3651 they multiplied H7235 and grew H3651 H6555 . And they were grieved H6973 because H4480 H6440 of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 .

13. and demanded even more of them.
|

14. They made their lives bitter. They forced the Israelites to work hard to make bricks and mortar and to do all kinds of work in the fields. The Egyptians were not merciful to them in all their pain- ful work.

15. Two Hebrew nurses, named Shiphrah and Puah, helped the Israelite women give birth to their babies. The king of Egypt said to the nurses,

15. And the king H4428 of Egypt H4714 spoke H559 to the Hebrew H5680 midwives H3205 , of which H834 the name H8034 of the one H259 was Shiphrah H8236 , and the name H8034 of the other H8145 Puah H6326 :

16. "When you are helping the Hebrew women give birth to their babies, watch! If the baby is a girl, let her live, but if it is a boy, kill him!"
|
16. And he said H559 , When ye do the office of a midwife H3205 to H853 the Hebrew women H5680 , and see H7200 them upon H5921 the stools H70 ; if H518 it H1931 be a son H1121 , then ye shall kill H4191 him : but if H518 it H1931 be a daughter H1323 , then she shall live H2425 .

17. But the nurses feared God, so they did not do as the king told them; they let all the boy babies live.
|
17. But the midwives H3205 feared H3372 H853 God H430 , and did H6213 not H3808 as H834 the king H4428 of Egypt H4714 commanded H1696 H413 them , but saved H2421 H853 the men children H3206 alive.

|
18. Then the king of Egypt sent for the nurses and said, "Why did you do this? Why did you let the boys live?"
|
18. And the king H4428 of Egypt H4714 called for H7121 the midwives H3205 , and said H559 unto them, Why H4069 have ye done H6213 this H2088 thing H1697 , and have saved H2421 H853 the men children H3206 alive?

19. The nurses said to him, "The Hebrew women are much stronger than the Egyptian women. They give birth to their babies before we can get there."
|
19. And the midwives H3205 said H559 unto H413 Pharaoh H6547 , Because H3588 the Hebrew women H5680 are not H3808 as the Egyptian H4713 women H802 ; for H3588 they H2007 are lively H2422 , and are delivered H3205 ere H2962 the midwives H3205 come in H935 unto H413 them.

20. God was good to the nurses. And the Hebrew people continued to grow in number, so they became even stronger.

20. Therefore God H430 dealt well H3190 with the midwives H3205 : and the people H5971 multiplied H7235 , and waxed very mighty H6105 H3966 .

21. Because the nurses feared God, he gave them families of their own.
|
21. And it came to pass H1961 , because H3588 the midwives H3205 feared H3372 H853 God H430 , that he made H6213 them houses H1004 .
|
|
22. So the king commanded all his people, "Every time a boy is born to the Hebrews, you must throw him into the Nile River, but let all the girl babies live."
|
22. And Pharaoh H6547 charged H6680 all H3605 his people H5971 , saying H559 , Every H3605 son H1121 that is born H3209 ye shall cast H7993 into the river H2975 , and every H3605 daughter H1323 ye shall save alive H2421 .
