1. IN THE FOURTH YEAR OF JOAKIM son of Josias king of Juda, the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

And it came to pass H1961 , that when Jeremiah H3414 had made an end H3615 of speaking H1696 unto H413 all H3605 the people H5971 H853 all H3605 the words H1697 of the LORD H3068 their God H430 , for which H834 the LORD H3068 their God H430 had sent H7971 him to H413 them, even H853 all H3605 these H428 words H1697 ,

2. Take thee a Or, paper, or, parchment roll of a book, and write upon it all the words which I spoke to thee against Jerusalem, and against Juda, and against all the nations, from the day when I spoke to thee, from the days of Josias king of Juda, even to this day.

2. Then spoke H559 Azariah H5838 the son H1121 of Hoshaiah H1955 , and Johanan H3110 the son H1121 of Kareah H7143 , and all H3605 the proud H2086 men H376 , saying H559 unto H413 Jeremiah H3414 , Thou H859 speakest H1696 falsely H8267 : the LORD H3068 our God H430 hath not H3808 sent H7971 thee to say H559 , Go H935 not H3808 into Egypt H4714 to sojourn H1481 there H8033 :

3. Perhaps the house of Juda will hear all the evils which I purpose to do to them; that they may turn from their evil way; and so I will be merciful to their iniquities and their sins.

3. But H3588 Baruch H1263 the son H1121 of Neriah H5374 setteth thee on H5496 H853 against us, for H4616 to deliver H5414 us into the hand H3027 of the Chaldeans H3778 , that they might put us to death H4191 H853 , and carry us away captives H1540 H853 into Babylon H894 .

4. So Jeremias called Baruch the son of Nerias: and he wrote from the mouth of Jeremias all the words of the Lord, which he had spoken to him, on a roll of a book.

4. So Johanan H3110 the son H1121 of Kareah H7143 , and all H3605 the captains H8269 of the forces H2428 , and all H3605 the people H5971 , obeyed H8085 not H3808 the voice H6963 of the LORD H3068 , to dwell H3427 in the land H776 of Judah H3063 .

5. And Jeremias commanded Baruch, saying, I am in prison; I cannot enter into the house of the Lord:

5. But Johanan H3110 the son H1121 of Kareah H7143 , and all H3605 the captains H8269 of the forces H2428 , took H3947 H853 all H3605 the remnant H7611 of Judah H3063 , that H834 were returned H7725 from all H4480 H3605 nations H1471 , whither H834 H8033 they had been driven H5080 , to dwell H1481 in the land H776 of Judah H3063 ;

6. so thou shalt read in this roll in the ears of the people in the house of the Lord, on the fast day; and in the ears of all Juda that come out of their cities, thou shalt read to them.

6. Even H853 men H1397 , and women H802 , and children H2945 , and the king H4428 's daughters H1323 , and every H3605 person H5315 that H834 Nebuzaradan H5018 the captain H7227 of the guard H2876 had left H5117 with H854 Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam H296 the son H1121 of Shaphan H8227 , and Jeremiah H3414 the prophet H5030 , and Baruch H1263 the son H1121 of Neriah H5374 .

7. Peradventure their supplication will come before the Lord, and they will turn from their evil way: for great is the wrath and the anger of the Lord, which he has pronounced against this people.

7. So they came into H935 the land H776 of Egypt H4714 : for H3588 they obeyed H8085 not H3808 the voice H6963 of the LORD H3068 : thus came H935 they even to H5704 Tahpanhes H8471 .

8. And Baruch did according to all that Jeremias commanded him—reading in the book the words of the Lord in the Lord’s house.
|
8. Then came H1961 the word H1697 of the LORD H3068 unto H413 Jeremiah H3414 in Tahpanhes H8471 , saying H559 ,
|
|
9. And it came to pass in the Alex. fifth eighth year of king Joakim, in the ninth month, all the people in Jerusalem, and the house of Juda, proclaimed a fast before the Lord.

9. Take H3947 great H1419 stones H68 in thine hand H3027 , and hide H2934 them in the clay H4423 in the brickkiln H4404 , which H834 is at the entry H6607 of Pharaoh H6547 's house H1004 in Tahpanhes H8471 , in the sight H5869 of the men H376 of Judah H3064 ;

10. And Baruch read in the book the words of Jeremias in the house of the Lord, in the house of Gamarias son of Saphan the scribe, in the upper court, in the entrance of the new gate of the house of the Lord, and in the ears of all the people.

10. And say H559 unto H413 them, Thus H3541 saith H559 the LORD H3068 of hosts H6635 , the God H430 of Israel H3478 ; Behold H2009 , I will send H7971 and take H3947 H853 Nebuchadnezzar H5019 the king H4428 of Babylon H894 , my servant H5650 , and will set H7760 his throne H3678 upon H4480 H4605 these H428 stones H68 that H834 I have hid H2934 ; and he shall spread H5186 H853 his royal pavilion H8237 over H5921 them.

11. And Michaeas the son of Gamarias the son of Saphan heard all the words of the Lord, out of the book.
|
11. And when he cometh H935 , he shall smite H5221 H853 the land H776 of Egypt H4714 , and deliver such H834 as are for death H4194 to death H4194 ; and such H834 as are for captivity H7628 to captivity H7628 ; and such H834 as are for the sword H2719 to the sword H2719 .

|
12. And he went down to the king’s house, into the house of the scribe: and, behold, there were sitting there all the princes, Elisama the scribe, and Dalaeas the son of Selemias, and Jonathan the son of Acchobor, and Gamarias the son of Saphan, and Sedekias the son of Ananias, and all the princes.
|
12. And I will kindle H3341 a fire H784 in the houses H1004 of the gods H430 of Egypt H4714 ; and he shall burn H8313 them , and carry them away captives H7617 : and he shall array himself H5844 with H854 the land H776 of Egypt H4714 , as H834 a shepherd H7462 putteth on H5844 H853 his garment H899 ; and he shall go forth H3318 from thence H4480 H8033 in peace H7965 .

13. And Michaeas reported to them all the words which he had heard Baruch reading in the ears of the people.
|
13. He shall break H7665 also H853 the images H4676 of Beth H1053 -shemesh, that H834 is in the land H776 of Egypt H4714 ; and the houses H1004 of the gods H430 of the Egyptians H4714 shall he burn H8313 with fire H784 .

|
14. And all the princes sent to Baruch son of Nerias Judin the son of Nathanias, the son of Selemias, the son of Chusi, saying, Take in thine hand the roll in which thou readest in the ears of the people, and come. So Baruch took the roll, and went down to them.

15. And they said to him, Read it again in our ears. And Baruch read it.
|

|
16. And it came to pass, when they had heard all the words, that they took counsel each with his neighbour, and said, Let us by all means tell the king all these words.
|

|
|
17. And they asked Baruch, saying, Where didst thou write all these words?
|
17.
|
|
18. And Baruch said, Jeremias told me from his own mouth all these words, and I wrote them in a book.
|
18.
|
|
19. And they said to Baruch, Go, and hide, thou and Jeremias; let no man know where ye are.
|
19.
|
|
20. And they went in to the king into the court, and gave the roll to one to keep in the house of Elisama; and they told the king all these words.
|
20.
|
|
21. And the king sent Judin to fetch the roll: and he took it out of the house of Elisama: and Judin read in the ears of the king, and in the ears of all the princes who stood round the king.
|
21.
|
|
22. Now the king was sitting in the winter house: and there was a fire on the hearth before him.
|
22.
|
|
23. And it came to pass when Judin Gr. was reading had read three or four leaves, he cut them off with Gr. a scribe’s razor, or, scraper a penknife, and cast them into the fire that was on the hearth, until the whole roll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth.
|

|
|
24. And the king and his servants that heard all these words sought not the Lord, and rent not their garments.
|
24.
|
|
25. But Elnathan and Godolias Alex. +and Gamarias suggested to the king that Alex. that he should not burn the roll he should burn the roll.
|
25.
|
|
26. And the king commanded Jeremeel the king’s son, and Saraeas the son of Esriel, to take Baruch and Jeremias: but they were hidden.
|
26.
|
|
27. Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremias, after the king had burnt the roll, even all the words which Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremias, saying,
|
27.
|
|
28. Again take thou another roll, and write all the words that were on the roll, sc. which words which king Joakim has burnt.
|
28.
|
|
29. And thou shalt say, Thus saith the Lord; Thou hast burnt this roll, saying, Why hast thou written therein, saying, The king of Babylon shall certainly come in, and destroy this land, Alex. +and shall destroy man, etc. and man and cattle shall fail from off it?
|
29.
|
|
30. Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning Joakim king of Juda; He shall not have a man to sit on the throne of David: and his carcass shall be cast forth in the heat by day, and in the frost by night.
|
30.
|
|
31. And I will visit him, and his family, and his servants: and I will bring upon him, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the land of Juda, all the evils which I spoke of to them; and they hearkened not.
|
31.
|
|
32. And Baruch took another roll, and wrote upon it from the mouth of Jeremias all the words of the book Gr. which words which Joakim had burnt: and there were yet more words added to it like the former.
