Understanding the Bible

Bible Scriptures spoke to us now in our contemporary context, but there is some issue with our understanding of biblical scripture from the biblical context to our context. To understand the scripture we need to understand the background of the Bible so that we can bring a clear picture and meaning to our understanding. In the bible, we have Old Testament and New Testament. Old Testament books are around 4000 years of stories, recorded in scrolls around 3000 to 2500 years before. New Testament books are about 100 years of stories, recorded in the scroll around 1500 years before. Old Testament talks about Israel and New Testament talks about Jesus and His church. Old Testament books are written in Hebrew Language and New Testament books are written in Hebrew and Greek Languages. The Bible books are written by about 40 Authors, who wrote different books and different times and for different people and different contexts. So with that background, we have to study the book in our contemporary context.

Meaning of the Text

When we talk about biblical interpretation we talk about explaining the meaning of the text so that to understand the truth. One word can have multiple meanings depending on the context. So the meaning of the bible is important in regard to context. When communication between sender and receiver goes wrong then the meaning of the text will also change. Here the meaning of the speaker and the meaning of the receiver, both aspects of meaning involves in the scene. We have to understand the context of the book and the intent of the author so that we will have the correct meaning of the text.

The Understanding Gap

There is an understanding gap between written words to us. The Scriptural words are written thousands of years back. During this period various changes happen in society, language, and politics. Only God who is from the beginning could understand the word. We are born in the middle. We are not from the beginning. So to understand the scripture we need to bridge the gap. There are linguistic, cultural, historical, and geographical gaps. These could be bridged by the cultural and historical background studies of the Bible books.

Understanding the prophetical element in Scripture

Scripture contains the prophecy for the specific ages. God did everything by His word. Before God do anything in this world he said it before. In Old Testament, God spoke to Noah about the upcoming flood (Gen 6:13), and God spoke to Abraham about the future great nations and blessed seed Jesus Christ (Gen 22: 17-18). Likewise in New Testament, God spoke about the end time to Church (Rev 13). God is never an afterthought, God knows how the world goes and will end up. That is why He told us about the end of this world and the beginning of new heaven and earth. The sovereignty of God is revealed through the fulfilment of His prophetical word. God can say the future because God is in control of History. We have to understand the prophetic element in the scripture. So that to bring forthright kind of interpretation.

The time element in scripture

God spoke to Daniel about the last days. But Daniel the wisest of all Babylonians could not able to understand and so he requested God in prayer to know the meaning. God's reply to his request was “It is not for you, it is for the end time” (Dan 12:8-9). In other words, it is not for the current age it is for the upcoming future era. In Bible, we have a scriptural prophecy for the 3 eras, called the Messianic Era, the Church Era, and Anti Christ Era. For the Old Testament people of God, God prophesied about the upcoming Revelation and Scriptural Understanding messiah's arrival and arise of the set of the new group of God’s people called church. For the church, God prophesied the future event of the anti-Christ era.
